Thoughts that Fused

I.N: F1

Posted in In News (I.N), Opinion by GenSephyr on September 27, 2008

F1 (as in the Formula One race and not the key between the “Esc” and “F2″.. haha :P ) is finally here! Although it is a huge event, it seem like there isn’t much hype on the streets. However, it is still something to look at.

Online, saw a few free Microsoft software for photographers that seem quite useful. Downloaded those but have not installed it yet though.
They are:

Also, for those who need a quick way of editing photos, and don’t want a full image editor like GIMP, there is the free https://www.photoshop.com/, which recently included a mobile version for Windows Mobile users also. Adobe gives a decent amount of storage space too..

On Wall Street, it seems like Washington Mutual Inc was closed by the U.S. government in by far the largest failure of a U.S. bank, and its banking assets were sold to JPMorgan Chase & Co for $1.9 billion (Source: Reuters).

There are many other news, but its just too tedious to follow. I have a list of events (non-exhaustive) that happened on the first 7 days, but I really cannot keep up (on the updating) after that.

Back in Asia, there seems to be no sign of an end to the milk scandal. The the products tainted by Melamine have increased over this week, as the recalling of all products (with milk contents) that are manufactured in China continues.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) yesterday said that China’s contaminated milk powder scandal was ‘deplorable’ as more countries in Asia and Europe banned imports of Chinese milk products. (Source: BT)

Personally, I have dumped quite a few items at home that are China-made with milk contents. What a waste of money! :( .
But there isn’t a choice.. Better be safe than sorry….

NTR: Massive Portfolio Update

Posted in Note To Readers (NTR), Work by GenSephyr on September 25, 2008

After scouring through my external hard drive for screen shots, I did a massive update to my portfolio. I’ve now included some themes that I’ve done as far back as 2005. They are mostly Blogger and WordPress themes, but nonetheless, still designs I’ve done.

Sadly, I can’t find those before that. Maybe it got lost when my hard drive got reformated around that time..Sigh..

Anyway, have a great night! Cheers!

Was looking around for calendars on the internet when I found this little gem. Seems to be quite popular.. Wonder why I didn’t find this in the past… I guessed its only recently that I started looking at things to minimize the time I spend on the computer for work….

Anyway, For Those Interested (FTI): check out David Seah’s Compact Calendar which have already been updated for 2009. The download comes in the form of an excel spreadsheet.

With the collapse of Lehman brothers as well as the takeover of Merrill Lynch, the economy is going into a troublesome time.

I.N: All in the Core

Posted in In News (I.N), Opinion by GenSephyr on September 19, 2008

Technology really has moved to fast. Just how power-hungry (in this case, processor-hungry) people are? I just wonder what will our electricity consumption be like the near future.. I don’t think its something to look forward to…

(P.s. This I.N. comes earlier this week due to a special I.N. I’m posting on Sunday.)

Some interesting updates this week:

  1. More Cores..
Ouch! The monthly power supply bill is going to go up to the roof (and maybe out of it)!

(15 September 2008) SAN FRANCISO – Intel Corp. announced seven new 45-nm multicore Xeon 7400 processors aimed at high-end servers.
The Xeon 7400 devices feature up to six processor cores per chip and 16 MB of shared cache memory.

  2. Google data centers cruising out to sea?
    Google's Sea Power

    Google Power

Google… is considering deploying the supercomputers necessary to operate its internet search engines on barges anchored up to seven miles (11km) offshore…

…The “water-based data centers” would use wave energy to power and cool their computers, reducing Google’s costs…

    Source: TIMES ONLINE

According to Guardian, Google has applied patents for the idea (the original patent application)..

  3. Tim Berners-Lee Announces World Wide Web Foundation

“The World Wide Web Foundation seeks to advance One Web that is free and open, to expand the Web’s capability and robustness, and to extend the Web’s benefits to all people on the planet. “

    Source: Web Foundation Site

The foundation is still at its infancy, with its full launch scheduled in 2009. It will be interesting to note what they can really accomplish. Moreover, I do find this thought by Sir Tim intriguing:

“If the Foundation achieves all the things I can imagine now, we will have failed.”

Ok.. That’s all folks!

FTI: Anti-Theft Lunch Bag?

Posted in For Those Interested (FTI), Random by GenSephyr on September 17, 2008

A tasteful idea? Its quite disgusting to look at actually…

But then again, I guess that is the main idea behind the “anti-theft” bag.. Haha

Mouldy Bag Or Bread?

Mouldy Bag Or Bread?

“Anti-Theft Lunch Bags are regular sandwich bags that have green splotches printed on both sides. With your sandwich inside, the bag simulates mold and makes the contents look disgusting”

Saw this on Lifehacker. Originally posted at: http://www.skforlee.com/independent_work/lunch_bag.html

Movie: My Sassy Girl (2008)

Posted in Movie, Opinion by GenSephyr on September 15, 2008

Went to watch “My Sassy Girl” the other day.

I must admit that  went in with not much enthusiasm for it, but left the cinema quite satisfied with the movie.

This movie is actually a remake of the highly successful 2001 Korean film of the same name. According to many online comments, the original Korean show was much better. However, as I didn’t watch the original Korean version, I felt the remake was decent, and quite pleasant to watch.

There are quite a few memorable parts of the movie…In fact, some of the quotes are still stuck in my head… haha.

“Jordan Roark: We have to stay alive, because we have to see how the story ends.”

“Charlie Bellow (or was it Charles?): If we never see each other again, and one day, you feel a certain presence beside you… that would be me, loving you wherever I am. “

“Jordan Roark: Destiny has spoken, and to search for him, will be like trying to shape and mold destiny and that just can’t be a good idea.

Old Man: Just suppose that the shaping and molding of destiny is infact your destiny…”

“Old Man: Destiny is the bridge you build to the one you love.

“Old Man: I wish you a story with a happy ending and wisdom to look for it.

Cheers!
