Thoughts that Fused

Deviation of truth

Posted in Random, Thoughts by GenSephyr on February 26, 2008

Like they all say, if you want to deviate from the truth, don’t get caught.

If you are unwilling in the first place, don’t bother approaching. Whats the point of you approaching when you end up conveying half-truths or even total deviation from the truth. It really doesn’t bode well on your own image.

I have two words to say to that: “think first”.

World War 2: Ending Phase 1943-1945

Posted in Essay by GenSephyr on February 24, 2008

You know the start? If not take a look at last week’s post on World War 2: Opening Phase 1939-1940 Now for the ending…

By 1943, people were fed up with Mussolini and war. Italy had gone into war when it was not militarily prepared and suffered many war defeats and hardships. The Oct 1940 invasion of Greece was repulsed. The September 1940 North African campaigns also failed disastrously. Italians were infuriated when Germany was using Italy as a resource rather than an ally. Mussolini was eventually dismissed by the King. In July 1943, Allies landed on Sicily and captured it within 38 days. Sicily was used to launch an attack in the mainland, and this factor caused Mussolini’s fall from power. Badoglio replaced Mussolini and went for negotiations to arrange for Italy’s surrender. Germany lost an ally as a result. Allies landed at Salerno and met up with very…

World War 2: Opening Phase 1939-1940

Posted in Essay by GenSephyr on February 17, 2008

World War 2 (WWII) never fail to make it as one of the more important topics in a History class. Reasons and speculations have been made on why World War 2 happen even though the world had experienced with the atrocities of World War 1. Reasons given among many are:

  • The unfair Treaty of Versailles: Left Germans with bitterness and wanting revenge for the humiliation they underwent
  • League of Nation: Collective security is an idealistic policy.
  • Great Depression
  • Appeasement Policies of some League of Nation Members.

So how did it actually start? Enter the opening phase period of 1939 to 1940….

German army advanced into Western Europe and had straight victories till Battle of Britain. War aims of Germany were to conquer lebensraum, overthrow Treaty of Versailles, reunite all Germans and dominate the world.

Germans struck Poland on 1st September 1939 with a series of Blitzkrieg, which had elements of speed and surprise and took place in 3 stages. Panzers smashed through defense lines at rate of 50 miles per day. Luftwaffe (German aircraft) bombed communications, supplies, headquarters and destroyed Soviet air and tank force. Lastly, infantry troops were sent in to drive through demoralized enemy forces.

The Luftwaffe paralyzed Polish railway system and air force. Poland could not…

Taiwan Celebrities commenting on Singaporean English

Posted in Opinion by GenSephyr on February 9, 2008

(POST UPDATED: Tuesday, Feburary 10. 2008)

First it was comments on our mandarin by the Chinese in China and now our English is also the “talk of the town”?

While I would hesitate to say that they were criticizing our language after viewing the video, I also can’t call the show a discussion either due to the absence of a Singaporean in the show line-up. Its a very one-sided discussion with little or no basis and engagement.

While its true that many Singaporeans don’t speak queen’s English or even concise/precise English. However, over-generalizing isn’t healthy. Sure its entertaining, but it is also a form of defamation and quite derogatory. If they were to say that many Singaporeans speak that way, I understand. But to target all Singaporeans is not right.
They aren’t researchers into literary, nor have they looked into our cultural aspects and living environment. Clearly, these are just mindless attacks on our culture.

The English language mutates and changes over time. The dictionary evolve from year to year. From the Shakespearean time to now, the language has evolved. With so much diversity in Singaporean society, I don’t think it is possible for every single person, every single citizen from so many different races and also backgrounds, in a country with 4 or more official languages can reach the same standards as another country like America with only one official language.

What I said above are only personal opinions and first impressions after watching the video. Anyone is free to disagree. But I still feel that there is too little thought put into the show.

However, I do not deny that it has most probably achieved its goal of stirring sentiments and discussions on the topic.

For those interested, here’s the video I found on Youtube:

UPDATE:
Looks like someone posted another video in response to the above video on Youtube….

Sounds of sleep

Posted in Lifestyle, Thoughts, Work by GenSephyr on February 8, 2008

I woke up at 5am today. Guess army life is getting into me. Like clockwork, at 2230hours, I start feeling sleepy. I didn’t even have the energy to use the computer until today.

Yawns.. Never felt so tired even when I slept at 12.30am and woke up at 6am during my secondary and Junior College school days.

Well, it is definitely a nice break from the usual routine orders. Finally finished reading a book titled: “Twilight” by Stephenie Meyer. Not a bad read. Had it finished in a day…. Going to get the sequels. Now its on to “for one more day” by Mitch Albom…

I wonder if I can break free from the computer. Even in the army, I land up with a design project. More specifically, its a poster design project. I haven’t had the strength to think about it. Frankly, graphics design hasn’t always been my strength. My strength lies more in CSS, XML and its derivatives (which includes XHTML etc.).

Spam emails are getting on my nerves. Not that it never did. Just two weeks and my Windows Live Mail (aka. Hotmail) has 500+ messages, my Gmail has about 20+. I haven’t checked yahoo yet. Sheesh..

I should rest my eyes again. Turning red with tiredness again….

Till the next post. Its ciao!
