Shoot 3
Its been 2 weeks since the ending of the channel U series: 有话之说 Let’s Shoot! I’ve never really followed every episode of the series but just enough. There are certainly topics worth noting in the episode and also phrases that are worth a laugh. For example, the “environmental conservation, is it really working?”, “Do people say air their views or still keep to themselves?” as well as a highly impact topic on “teenage sex”.
Some funny sayings:
专家 = 专们害人家
Some quotes which resonates:
跌倒了要记得制式,不要以同样的制式在跌倒.
(Translation: Fall already must remember your position, don’t fall into the same position again.)如果个人要看氧气不足的节目, 而不要去提升自己,没有人可以帮。
(Translation: If one wants to watch shows that aren’t educational, and not want to improve oneself, no one is able to help.)说了可能没有效果,可是不说就肯定没效果。
(Translation: Saying something may not have any effect, not not saying will definitely not bring about any effect.)
Its a pity they have no plans on continuing.
But at least what nougats of knowledge and quotes that had been said can’t be un-said…neither will it be dis-continued….

League Of Nations: Strength and Weakness
This is a short follow up on last week’s LN essay.
The League of Nations managed to end secret diplomacy and alliance to a large extent and also open up new international relations between states and the international organization. It promoted peace and international cooperation between states. Living conditions like health and education also improved.
However, there were major weaknesses in the league that caused its downfall. It can be classified into two categories, structural and non-structural.
For example, collective security was too idealistic as it was very difficult to get members to agree. Thus it impeded many peacekeeping efforts. It also laced worldwide membership. This made carrying out sanctions difficult as non-member states did not need to adhere to the covenant. The absence of USA meant the loss of economic and political backing of a super power. Because of …

Lifestyle Change
I was on this side of the glass when I said goodbye.. Now its time to be on the other side..
Its goodbye to the drudgery of this current lifestyle and hello to another more drudgery lifestyle..
The time has come to experience confinement….
Oh. Feel free to sms me… you know how to contact me…. I will reply when I can.
No charging of phones allowed, thus running on limited battery power!
Its “sobs” to the end of freedom and “woo-hoo” to finally starting the countdown from 730 days of training.
Project complete
Finally. I’ve completed the my final web project just in time before I book myself into military life for the next 2 years. Welcoming it with mixed feelings.
Anyway, reflecting on the website, I can say that I am happy with the result. It wasn’t easy, seeing that I worked as a one-man team, designing all aspects of the site from the presentation layer to the business logic layer, the data access layer to even the server software layer. Server software layer included the set up of the server, installation of server programs as well as managing the ip addresses, domain names, routing and stuff. It was actually out of my ability. Had to research and learn while on the job. Loss quite a lot of hair (I didn’t really bother about that though… Going to have to cut my hair very short before I enter army also) ….
Thankfully there was some reprise among all these in the form of an existing CMS system.
Yay! Can go in without much worries about this project already!
EDIT: Looks like I got myself another web project again even before I enter army.
Breakfast as (after)thought
There was an article in yesterday’s paper discussing about breakfast and eating right. However, a survey of students in a primary school found that while breakfast is supposedly the most important meal of the day, few actually put much focus on it. A dietitian recommends that one spend at least 15 to 20 minutes on it.
The article stated that:
“Kids being kids, between sleep and waking up earlier for breakfast, they will probably choose the former”
(quoted ad verbatim).
I beg to differ. I don’t think the choice is due to their age but rather the personality and practicality of Singaporeans.
Most Singapore schools start very early in the morning. School days are also relatively long. Thus, even getting a little more sleep in the morning makes sense. In the morning, time is very limited. Things are worser as we proceed up the education ladder. Traffic jams (for those who live far away), and other factors already cause students to wake up even earlier. If you still need to factor in breakfast, then it would be very tiring indeed.
Losing sleep is just as bad as not eating right. We’re just probably choosing the lesser of 2 evils from a student’s viewpoint.
Maybe the focus shouldn’t be on “whether we are eating right” in the morning but whether “is there time allowed for eating” in the morning….
Its worth a thought…
League Of Nations: Role and Structure
Please read/note the Terms of Use before using the essays.
.
The League of Nations was established in April 1919 to deal with the difficult international problems. The League, as well as the framework and structure is bounded by the covenant, which is a set of rules that member states have to follow. It aimed to discourage aggression, encourage trade and disarmament and improve living and working conditions of people worldwide. It also worked by the principle of collective security, in which all disputes threatening war would be submitted to the League and any member resorting to war would have broken the Covenant, and would face collective action by other members.
The Council consisted of 4 permanent members, 5 after 1926 (Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan) and 4 non-permanent members (11 by 1936). It dealt with problems when Assembly was not in session and could organize sanctions against an offending state. All decisions must be unanimous. However, permanent members had veto powers to reject decisions to safeguard their own national interests. Thus, unanimity was never achieved. The Council also met infrequently.
The Assembly consisted of all member states and aimed to be a debating chamber for them. Each member state had a vote and all decisions had to…

Just break the rules?
Was at block 684 in Hougang the other day having dinner. It dawned on me how some people can be so unreasonable and also thoughtless in the way they act.
Its been quite a while since the smoking ban came into effect in Singapore. However, people are still puffing away in coffee shops in the no smoking area.
Maybe we can give them a benefit of a doubt, saying that they are ignorant, but apparently, that guy definitely wasn’t ignorant…. He smoking under the “no smoking” sign and was hiding the cigarette under the table after each puff and looking around. I guess no one dared to say anything or even glance at him especially when he was sporting “full-body art” (read: tattoos).
Alright. So no one said anything. Fine. Actually, I don’t really mind that much if he doesn’t bother anyone (although my life is being sucked away by second-hand smoke). But that guy was smoking beside 4 cylinders of gas. Great. Thankfully, the day didn’t end with the guy bringing everyone at the coffee shop down 18 floors with him..
Ok. So you guess that was it… No. I afraid not.
What’s “even better” is that a stall holder was flouting the rules too, smoking away, and putting his half-smoked cigarette on a aluminum can, which was hanging from, ironically, a fire extinguisher.
Such uncouth and thoughtless behavior.
I guess the usual saying applies:
Rules are made to be broken.
and Rules are meant to be broken.
